The Bird Series comprises 12 issues representing 12 selected endangered bird species was minted in 2005. The 12 endangered bird species in the series are the straw- headed Bulbul , Great Argus , white- bellied Sea Eagle, Collared Kingfisher , Asian Fairy Bluebird , Rhinoceros Hornbill, Nicobar Pigeon, Crested Wood Partridge, Black and Red Broadbill, Great Egret, Green Imperial Pigeon and Brown Shrike. The coins are made of nordic gold with a face value of 25 sen. The obverse of the coin depicts one of the 12 birds and the words "ENDANGERED SPECIES SERIES" is on the upper part of the circumference.
The common name of the bird in Bahasa Malaysia, English and its scientific name are on the lower part of the circumference.The reverse of the coin depicts the denomination and the logo for the Bird Series, represented by the Hornbill.
The Bird Series coins are minted and distributed by the Royal Mint of Malaysia. They can be bought from the BNM, the Coin Shoppe of the Royal Mint of Malaysia in Shah Alam and the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park.
